About

The scenario:

In my teens and twenties I saw a lot of live music. With single parenthood my desire and ability to get to gigs and festivals waned. Then my son learned to play drums, joined a band, and hung out with lots of other people in bands and into music. Luckily we have the kind of relationship which means he lets me drive him to lots of gigs and buy him lots of tickets. Even better, he lets me come too, sometimes, so I get to lug gear, hang out with bands, be in on the in-jokes and have lots of fun. I try to not live vicariously through him but feel invigorated and emotional when I see people performing live music and energised by the joy and dynamism of being with exuberant people – many young, but not all.  The band, Go Dutch, formed in May 2007 and to date (Jan 09) has played 50 gigs. I became a Go Mom, a Roadie Mom.. rock n roll mum.

The main players:

Me. 41 year old mum to Billy

Billy. My son, 15 year old drummer in Go Dutch

Go Dutch. An ‘indie rock trio’ of school friends featuring Billy, Noah & Ollie

Noah. 15 year old lead guitarist, Billy’s best mate, son of Rick and Nichole

Rick & Nichole. AKA Richole. Canadians living 50yards from us, up the hill in a house we call Canada. Good friends

Ollie. 16 year old singer and bass player in Go Dutch

Roger & Jill. Parents of the bass player, known as The Ollies

Mark: My brother. AKA Uncle Mark. Lives in London, visits Bristol often to see his daughter Megan

Megan: My 17 year old niece. AKA Meg, Meegan the Veegan (she’s not), Megster.

I like the cast of characters.

I have never seen that on a blog and it is indeed a useful device.

Hey this could be the Archers of RocknRoll mumdom! I’d like to see cartoon pix of the characters – photos would not leave enough to the imagination. Is there a link to Go Dutch?

Pray tell me – what are the vital qualities required of a RnR Mum?

Is there an age limit? As a childless middle aged woman I wonder if I could adopt a mumless band? Maybe my nobel intentions would be misconstrued if I sidled up to some bonnie bunch of lads and asked if they required an extra mum for gigs.
